The Truth?

Someone once said, (so I'm told); - "The truth is like a chandelier, everyone can see it, but it looks different depending on where you're sitting!"
So my truth about coaching? Well, what I've found is... I feel a resistance about getting into 'promises' and I feel the same about 'structured programmes'.
Why?  Because doing either is for me
1) hard work
2) not as much fun
3) is limiting for me and my clients - it's harder to be creative if you're in a self imposed straight-jacket!
What I can say from experience is that my coaching clients get 1) something they haven't got now, and 2) it will be something better than they have now.
So, what happens in coaching with me? How does it work?

I'll say that for me, it's a bit like telling someone how to ride a bike. You can see it works but it's very hard to explain how it works, and what goes on.  Not easy, but here goes.

The first thing that happens when we meet is that we'll have an introductory 'chat' for a few minutes. You'll get to know more about me and I'll find out a bit about you.  Then we'll start a conversation about what's going on for you right now, and what you'd like to have happen, or if this isn't yet clear, we'll develop some ideas to look at. Sometimes it takes a while because there may be so many things happening for you right now.

Secondly, during our discusions I'm gently teasing out the complexity of your situation - a bit like pulling tangled string apart - not so hard as it knots up, not so gentle as nothing happens - until a thread appears. Now we have something to get hold of!  We keep following this thread, looking at what I like to term 'Whats going on behind what's going on' because there are some great insights to be won here. Once we understand more about situations, the more chance we have of taking appropriate steps. Clarity is a wonderful thing!

As our sessions progress, amongst other things, we'll be looking at some future events that are coming up for you. Now is the time to work out strategies and tactics - which I call 'setting up for success'.  This is powerful, not least because most people don't have the opportunity to really think deeply about this. We can play around with scenarios, check possible outcomes, develop plan B's and rehearse plan A. In doing this I've found it's very common to uncover gems that are of incredible value.

The process unfolds and you'll notice you gain confidence because you will be doing more and experienceing more 'wins'. We work on your thinking, feelings and values and arrange to align your self and your environment. We figure out what's important, now and for the future, and plot a course. I'll challenge you and stretch you in the areas you need to most leverage, but I'll support you too. You'll do 'homework' and we'll de-brief on your progress. (That's why regular contact pays off).

We'll go back and forth, unpicking more knots and moving forwards, figuring out more solutions, getting flashes of inspriation. We figure out communication strategies and put them in place. We examine how you show up in certain situations and fine tune your presence. The list goes on. If it's sales you want, we'll work on that. If its management and leadership, then we'll look at theories and practicalities and you'll determine your best actions.  If it's an intercultural assignment, we'll cover that (and there's a whole team of colleagues available at www.globalcoaches.com to support you). If it's your team, we'll look at structure, communication, motivation, tactics, support, goals, relationships, and more, oh, and by the way, your leadership.

As I said, it's a bit like describing how to ride a bike. I hope you have at least a flavour of what happens, but, like riding the bike, nothing can replace having the experience, and that means getting on the bike! I invite you to call or email me and arrange a complimentary discussion so you can experience the ride for yourself!
